NVIDIA's best, doubled up, tripled up, quad, benchmarked and reviewed.

Introduction

In today’s ever-changing world of blisteringly fast technology, and shortened development cycles, owning and making full use of the latest GPU on the market is quickly becoming a headache, and an expensive one at that.

With NVIDIA dominating 2007 with their highly successful Geforce 8 series, namely the 8800 Ultra, GTX, GT and GTS models, together with their G92 reincarnation, and ATI seeking to make a comeback after their merger with AMD yielded DAAMIT but not much tangible in terms of GPU hardware to die for, what does 2008 have to offer?

We hereby seek to put the entire current high end GPUs head to head against each other and seek to elect the current GPU to own, while also taking into consideration the price to performance ratio of each GPU, respectively.

Read on if you want to see pixels move, rasters blister and polygons blossom.

Great read, high quality review, very informative. If gaming is to take full advantage of the capabilities of these graphics cards, we will need to have a shift of paradigm in the coding of software. A GPU is a massively parallel machine, in contrast to traditional coding technologies which largely inhibit parallelism. Is CUDA a step in that direction? I sure hope so.

Next up would be GTX 280 vs 9800 GX2 vs 4870X2. Have no intention of doing 4850 or 4870 sorry.

Brilliant review zeDoc... informative and detailed just enough not to bore the average reader and satisfy the gurus. Keep it up! Two 8800GTs in SLi are definitely the most worth it graphics card setup you can have at the moment.

great review zeDoc! It takes time, patience and a lot of dedication to make such a review, and you've certainly hit the nail here. Very informative and can help a lot in deciding what to buy. The 8800GT certainly seems to be the best price for money right now, but the 9800GX2 sure dishes out a lot of power if the buyer is seeking the top :) Now we await a comparison between the GTX280 and the upcoming 4870X2... and it seems the latter is at advantage... will ATI/AMD have another surprise up their sleeve?

Cannot run Crossfire on a 790i unless I hack the drivers {can be done, but not in the mood to wade through the web looking for the modified 790i drivers that invalidate my chipset warranty!}.
