SteelSeries back to their roots with a competitive gaming surface |

Introduction
SteelSeries is definitely the name when it comes for professional gaming gear. Having started with mats, the Danish company has now expanded its armoury to gaming headsets, keyboards and the newly released Ikari mice in Optical and Laser variety. Although they have infiltrated new areas quite successfully to equip gamers with the best gear, they haven’t abandoned the original equipment that started their business back in 2001.
This year, their line-up of mats has been expanded by 2 new ones, the SX Pro, which was a limited edition mat, but is still available today at quite a dear price of €53 (current price at Ultra Computers), and a December’s release of the SP mat. The SX pro was boasted as an expensive mat with fully fledged development and no cuts in any part of the development. This seemed to be the ultimate mat for those who could afforded. Jet Black surface anodized oxide coats the fibre polished aluminium. Well you might say “who cares”, and frankly you’re quite right as long as it gets the job done. The SX pro was gliding nirvana for those who like speedy, large surfaces but aluminium would get so cold in winter time that you may end up suffering from arthritis at an early age unless you’re wearing a glove. Been there done that and having my hand on the edge of frostbites the whole day was a sacrifice I was willing to pay for gaming accuracy. But this doesn’t have to be anymore.
Today we are reviewing the SP mousemat, which comes in exactly in the same shape as the SX does, but this time it’s made from the blessed hard plastic. The surface is macroscopic textured, which can be felt with the bare hands nonetheless. Having been developed for Optical and Laser sensors, the surface has minimal friction. But for €15 short of the cool elder brother, how much different is this surface; is there any significant performance decrease for a more mainstream price?
