Would such a small fish manage to eat bigger ones?
Viewed 2893 times.

Introduction

Here we have it, the Razer Piranha headset, emerging among other recent (and not recent) headsets around... ironically a piranha is a small fish, which does not do much alone, none the less, vicious like all the creatures Razer have chosen to name their hardware after. But will such a small fish make its competition its prey? Or get lost in the infinite ocean of hardware? Well… we’re here to see!

Like all Razer products, the packaging for the Piranha gives you the feel as if you’re opening a top secret assassination weapon, all black, sleek, sexy and elegant. Inside one will find the cozily tucked in headset with mic, phones and USB connector, along with a nice Razer catalogue, two 10 cm by 10 cm Razer stickers to decorate your system with, a certificate of authenticity {which upon reading makes you feel like you’re the most privileged person on Earth}, and last but not least a neat, simple and elegant “Quick start guide”.

Completely not surprised, the Piranha’s presentation so far is excellent. Let’s get into more detail now, shall we?

With regards to specifications here’s a brief list of the official Piranha’s specs:

• True-to-life audio quality with superior clarity and bass
• Adjustable, noise-filtering microphone for clearer in-game communication
• Comfortable, ergonomic and adjustable earphones suitable for prolonged use.
• In-line remote control with convenient volume and microphone muting adjustments
• Single-sided cable for hassle-free usage
• Durable braided fiber cable protection
• Internet telephony compatible
• Compatible with most major operating systems
• Usable with CD, DVD and digital audio players (via 3.5mm minijack)
Freq. response: 18 – 22,000 Hz
Impedance: 32 Ohms
SPL (@ 1 kHz, 1 Vrms): 114 dB
Cable: 3.0 meters
Microphone
Freq. response: 80 – 15,000 Hz
Sensitivity (@ 1 kHz, 1V/Pa): -38 dB
Impedance: ~2 kOhms
Pick-up pattern: Uni-directional

And for further boring quoting from Razer’s mouth itself:

« The Razer Piranha™ is engineered from the ground up to blend performance, long hours of comfort and functionality, to deliver realistic in-game audio that will satisfy the needs of the most demanding gamer – You.
From the legendary Razer Boomslang™ to the Razer DeathAdder™ and now the Razer Piranha™… you are now Razer™.

Now go forth and conquer.

True-to-life audio quality with superior clarity and bass.

An audio experience with crystal clear highs and visceral bass that will satisfy the needs of the most demanding gamer.

Adjustable, noise-filtering microphone.

Communicate clearly with your teammates through the noise-canceling microphone, even in crowded gaming environments.

Comfortable, ergonomic and adjustable head phones suitable for prolonged use.

The fully adjustable on-ear headphones and microphone ensure perfect fit and comfort for hours of use
»

However we all know that product sellers will say anything to market their product, let’s look further and see if it lives up to the marketing hype.

Excellent review! For that price I would go for a Siberia myself, or Razer's own Barracuda, although that would turn out more expensive in the end.

question of opinion, however once u see it, u'll realize it's not really that gay. I also saw the Piranha headset hanging out with headset chicks, and they where cute little samples mind u...

I tried them for 2 mins .. very very uncomfortable for me, especially since i wear glasses. Sound I didn't hear, since I was only interested in how they fit. Take this comparison: Razer: Metal chair li ssib fil-bar tal-klabb tal-bocci Siberia: A plush big expensive italian sofa

Siberia: Padded women's bra on your head, no other way of describing it, PR is lucky i didnt review that headset, it would have bordered on pornographic.

go for it? please.... although the lights are cool, i think the headset shouldn't have ever been designed in the first place. The ear cups are too small, uncomfortable and the sound sucks. Nothing more comfortable than a Siberia or sound better than a Sennheiser. I think you guys are kinda prejudiced towards razer, you gotta try logitech, creative or any other brand for that matter, Razer's mice aren't that good, their headphones are super expensive and some suck too. With the same price point, I prefer to buy something of higher quality, at a lesser price, plus having the guarantee and experience of a good company

« I think you guys are kinda prejudiced towards razer, you gotta try logitech » I hope thats not generalising to me included, im no razer fan boy, i use logitech, siberia, and zboard. Plus its a question of opinion, read the review in detail and u'll see, besides i specified that "IF YOU TRY THEM FIRST and feel them comfortable, yes go for it." Repeating the quote « I think you guys are kinda prejudiced towards razer » there is a bias towards razer from many users true, however pR is not biased towards any brand at all, once u get a grip of the site u'll maybe realise this. Also rest assured that pR administration is not full of drooling n00bs, and have worked on various, countless various brands, and know their s**t basically. Then again, its a matter of opinion, ATI vs NVIDIA, logitech VS Razer, sales depends on buyers, likes, comforts, and preferences. Simple. And btw, as you should agree, the review was unbiased and simply stating the obvious, like all hardware reviews on pR.

i dont mean any personal offence mind you, you and your team at PR have great reviews, the thing which really pissed me off is the reward.... And speaking of awards, with regards to the mouse of the year, I think the deathadder doesn't really merit to get gold, the G5 is by far much better, and as a personal preference I think that the Sidewinder really kicks ass. And yes, the review was unbiased, but points like "comfortable" and "powerful sound" shouldn't be bolded, because readers who just go trough the review will get the wrong impression. If nothing, bold the whole sentence :P

it deserved the "approved" reward mind u, not recommended or editors choice, it does fulfill what it requires with some added bonuses, even given it's flaws. With regards to to the rodent award, yes that was chosen by the general public that attended the battle of the rodents at Hackers. Personally I'm a logitech user, however many gamers believe strongly in razer. For my part, i find razer mice to have a flimsy feel, like something's lacking. Maybe it's their great marketing that does the trick.

*Siberia: Padded women's bra on your head, no other way of describing it, PR is lucky i didnt review that headset, it would have bordered on pornographic.* Quoted From Postaled #6 I don't think this comment is very impartial but anyways... nice review .... The only nice thing about piranha is the razer logo...

« I don't think this comment is very impartial but anyways... nice review .... » Ok more tunnel vision comments! yahoo!...sigh...Yes archy, that was a biased comment, simple i bought the siberia and i love it. it was a comment not a review, no problem with that now do u? Tnx for the comment

Im adicted to siberia, i take care of it, feed it, sleep with it, also read little stories to it too. It loves me, its a happy headset. We'll be together forever...and ever... With love, pOsTaLeD PS: if light on piranha bothers the user he can just pull out the USB connector and its done, their off

For all of those who haven't yet grasped the concept of our awards, please visit this page Every product SHOULD at least get an Approved award, which means it's a decent thing. No awards given during a review means that you should be extra cautious when buying s uch a product. definately not recommended and should read the review for a more insight on what's wrong with it. We did hve some review which did not earn an award at all, and There were products in the list, which to our opinion didn't deserve any awards, Creative and Razer Included

Hardware reviewing can be a tough job, although none here consider it a job full time. Reviewers here are impartial, on a voluntary basis, doing an assessment on hardware that they do their best to give an honest opinion on. Impartiality will always be called into question, and I see no particular brand being favoured, since we try to review almost all products across the board. I would be the first to tell Logitech, Razer or Creative to shove it if they ever attempted to push any sub-standard product or influence any reviewer. Cheers to Postaled and Delta for calling a spade a spade.

Siberia are good, I own the full size version XD (after I trashed the neckband ones), but nothing comes close to my lovely sennheisers. They are too good XD, and btw the Siberia do lack that bass thump at high levels, or it may be my sound card

you're speaking of a headset that is at least Lm100. can expecty a bit of an improvemnt, don't u take that forgranted? Coz after some time looking at the two, I think I have to choose the bose one ...

good point... i think i should be comparing the bose one to the new senheiser... and im pretty certain that the bose will be the better headset
