Microsoft revitalises gaming line with a new mouse.

Inside the Package
Microsoft are back with their own personal line of gaming accessories, with a collection of various devices for any kind of gamer. The Sidewinder series was the 'de facto' for gamers back in the day when the genre was still not a mainstream culture, making it an easier chore with technologies like Plug and Play on the now obsolete Gameport. But in this era, many companies are putting the term “gaming” in almost any ridiculous device around. Our job is to make sure that the devices reviewed here are given the fair judgment from gamers’ perspective.

Microsoft have made an attempt in reviving the old culture, firstly by working closely with Razer (in fact they even sold the original Tarantula design to Microsoft) in light of the Games for Windows campaign, promoting the Windows XP and Vista as the number one gaming platform. Here’s the first peripheral, announced in August 2007, the Sidewinder mouse.

Inside the package

The Sidewinder mouse comes enclosed in a bright and prominent red case, featuring the revamped Sidewinder logo, the mouse itself peeking out on the right hand side and the sides are detailed with the specifications of the new mouse in various European languages. Quite a casual presentation, so let us move on to check what’s inside the box.

As with all Microsoft hardware, the package includes a getting started guide and a detailed graphic manual that explains the installation process and the highlights of the Sidewinder mouse. The software for this mouse is only available as a download. I simply have nothing against this, as usually the included CDs are unutilized as downloads are quite fast and new updates render them outdated anyway. Of course there’s the big fat mouse in black and wine highlights and a toolbox, filled with extra 2 sets of mouse feet and weights, which also serves as a cord management system in itself.

Saw the mouse at an event....Thought it was made of cheap plastics. The buttons were in all the wrong places....Ergonomics...well you can forget about that. TBH you cannot be objective when trying a mouse. What one considers a perfect fit can be crappy for someone else. Having said that I'll stick with my Razer Copperhead

Cool review delta, as usual. it looks like a good mouse on the whole, from the review seems like it has good handling the wieghts i didnt like, maybe cos im used to the G5 which allows you to balance the mouse more accurately

yes the weight system on the mouse is definately more well built. Personally I've abandoned the weight thing some time ago, got rid of heavy mice, now I want something lighter

I agree with Delta on mouse weight. I myself keep 2 mice at home, both connected to my PC at the same time :P... I use my Logitech MX 700 for desktop applications, strategy games, adventure games and the like... and the MX 700 is one HEAVY mouse. When playing a game which requires faster reactions (mainly FPS), I immediately revert to my trusty old Trust mouse... can't remember the model exactly, but I know it is (1) Not wireless (2) 5 button (3) PS2! . So this is a pretty simple and barebones mouse, but I have yet to use a better gaming mouse... (1) It is large enough to provide you with an adequate grip (2) It is very light. I tend to think that some mice have more gimmicky ergonomics, looks and features to offer than they have real in-game performance and practicality. My 2 cents: stick with simple and light... but then again, it's mainly a question of taste.

Awesome review, always at the forefront with new gaming hardware! I prefer lighter mice personally, and the ergonomics, size and fit of the Sidewinder I do not really appreciate. Razer Deathadder/Lachesis for me.

Very good review Delta. Seeing that I own one of those rodents, I can say that I am really happy with it, it is super precise, fully customizable and decent hand grip. The scroll wheel is also of very good make and I love the on-the-fly dpi switching buttons. xD
